Whether employees are giving each other high fives when they walk in the door or eye rolling and the silent treatment is the norm - there are opportunities to make your workplace culture better!
Most people want to be happy at work. They want to FEEL (the other "F" word, I know) respected by their boss and coworkers. Think of a time where you felt respected by another person. What was that like for you? Did you stand a little taller? Did you feel good about yourself? Did that make you work harder? Focus more? Want to do better? It is amazing how behavior changes when someone feels respected. People actually work more efficiently and faster - they want to up their productivity and succeed. People are also more creative, more innovative - they are their best when they feel their best.
What about when you are the one showing someone else respect? How does that affect you? Usually, you can see them brighten - their face, even when serious, has that hint of satisfaction. They are proud - feel valued. You did that! You made a difference.
Positive and respectful behavior builds relationships and rapport. We know that people who have positive relationships at work - work better together and more efficiently. There is power in our behavior towards one another. As I tell my kids, we must all use our power for good and not evil because that will make for better workplace cultures and honestly, better humans.
